Sound design When creating your sound design for Things I Know to be True , you will want to consider how to: create atmosphere add to the action and emotion of a scene contribute to the setting and style of the play ful l the practical needs of the script. Some choices you can make involve the use of: live or recorded sound volume/ampli cation (use of microphones and speakers) naturalistic or symbolic sound music. TASK 32 Below are some sound effects which could be used in the play. Identify when they might be used and how they could be created: music suitable for dancing noises from a nightclub sounds or music to increase tension and suspense a telephone ringing the siren of an ambulance a car horn thunder and rain a leaf blower music which suggests the past crickets, frogs or other wildlife sound effects. TASK 33 Consider the different moods in the play, including romantic, violent, tense and sad, and choose pieces of music to underscore at least four different moments. TASK 34 a Identify two contrasting scenes from the play. Describe what effects you want to create for the audience, such as increasing tension and con ict, suggesting love or tenderness, aiding a transition or creating a surprise. b Write a detailed explanation of how your sound design will create these effects. Consider: when the sound/music will start and end its volume how it will be created (live, recorded, onstage or off) if it will fade in and out or snap on and off what direction the sound will come from (position of speakers, and so on).
