AQA GCSE Drama sample

TASK 16 Backdrop? Door? Projection? Window? Colours? Texture? Materials? Floor? Size/scale? Below are excerpts from three different sample responses to a question about the set at the beginning of Act 1. I am creating an abstract, non-naturalistic setting for the play, so will use large, metal scafolding. In the upstage centre section of the scafolding there will be a large screen upon which diferent images of Liverpool in the 1970s will be projected as the audience walks in and while the overture plays. 1 It will freeze on an image of boy twins and the caption: The Johnstone Twins. Upstage left is a smaller platform about two metres high which can be accessed by ladders. The Narator will make his first appearance there. 2 Downstage centre, Mrs Johnstone will appear, unaware of the narator above her. I think this will create suspense and interest for the audience who will wonder about the conection between the two characters and the projected image. 3 A Establishes 1970s setting and style of design CONTINUED Discusses scale and how set will be used Considers effect of design choices Draw a sketch showing: the colours and textures (rough, smooth, patterned, irregular) you will use the materials for the set (or what they will look like, i.e. stone, wood, plaster, metal) the scale of the set in relation to the size of the actors any levels (balconies, scaffolding, upper windows, platforms) where key events such as entrances/exits will occur. audience zig-zag down centre Johnstone side reds and browns stretlamp shrub overflowing trash can platform for narator Lyons side creams and blues ‘BLOD BROTHERS’ written on back wal in grafiti Blood Brothers – Act I, end on stage (stret scene) 68 COMPONENT 1 UNDERSTANDING DRAMA
