These are revised in the relevant sections for each CSP: • Social contexts : society’s attitudes and dominant opinions at the time the product was created. How closely does the product re ect (or subvert ) the values , attitudes and expectations of the audience , both at the time of release and when considered today? • Cultural contexts : these include how a media product ts in with other media produced at the same time. How closely does the product re ect (or subvert ) other products and their content? What is the cultural signi cance of a media product when viewed by audiences and critics? • Historical contexts : what was going on in the world when the product was created? How does the product re ect the time it was produced? • Political contexts : the impact of government regulation and in uence on the media , and the contrasting political perspectives on media issues. Analysing media products Knowledge and understanding should be developed through the practical analysis or creation of media products. • AO2: Analyse media products using the theoretical framework of media, including in relation to their contexts, to make judgements and draw conclusions. Communication theory Linear models of communication: • sender • message • receiver. Rapid Recap • A medium is a channel of communication. • The media are the main channels of communication. In order for communication to take place there must be: • a sender: the media producer • a message: the content of the media product • a receiver: the audience . Spec Spotlight Spec Spotlight For each media form, you have studied two or three CSPs. The contexts are usually di erent, which gives you a way to start comparing them. Tip Forty percent of the marks available for the GCSE overall will be awarded for the quality of your analysis of media products: both unseen sources and your CSPs.
