Edexcel GCSE Drama: Designing Drama
Examining the details of your set design In your evaluation, you will need to make at least three different points with examples that help to illustrate why you have made a particular value judgement. TASK 1.13 The geometric shapes used consistently throughout this set design are simple to achieve but give flexibility and create a striking effect. ( Brokers by Tylar Pendgraft performed by the USC School of Dramatic Arts.) 1 Copy and complete your own version of this table (examples are given based on the set design above). These notes will form a solid basis for your evaluative writing. Set design evaluation Design element Example / moment in the play Evaluation Reason for evaluation Suspended frames Pre-set and throughout the play. Engaging. Encouraged audience to ask questions and become involved. Encouraged the audience to think about uncertainty and things falling. Linked to the theme of the play. Movable cubes Scene changes. Effective in setting scenes quickly and simply. The fact that the boxes could be easily moved by the actors made it easy and quick to create different locations. Use of the colour white The moment when the character became depressed. Powerful in creating atmosphere and helping characterisation. The use of white in the set combined with the blue lighting created an atmosphere of emptiness and despair. 2 Once you have made your evaluation into a table like this, turn it into three paragraphs. Remember that you are evaluating. This means that you add a value judgement to an opinion and support it with examples. Chapter 1 Practical Guide to Set Design 31
