364 Understand the exam COMPONENT 1: What will I learn? • How the exam paper is structured, including sample exam questions and worked examples • About the different styles of exam questions that will be included in the written exam • The topic areas that you will be tested on during the written exam • The relevance of Assessment Objectives (AOs) when exam questions are written and marked • Useful hint and tips to maximise your exam success The exam structure The written exam is a compulsory element and you will be tested on the six areas of content listed in the introduction to this chapter. The format of the paper will always be the same. ALL QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY and there are two sections called Section A and Section B. The written exam will use the following assessment criteria: Assessment Objectives   AO1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of nutrition, food, cooking and preparation AO2 Apply knowledge and understanding of nutrition, food, cooking and preparation AO4 Analyse and evaluate different aspects of nutrition, food, cooking and preparation, including food made by yourself and others Section A Questions based on stimulus materials – the stimulus materials are a visual prompt and could be pictures of stages during the making of a dish, such as for example, the making of a Swiss roll or a quiche, or a mood board showing dishes made with shortcrust pastry. Section B In Section B you will be asked a range of questions, some will ask you to write brief answers, other questions will require longer answers with more discussion and explanation within your answers. Note however that you will find: • Questions that ask for extended writing will take place throughout the paper • When questions require extended writing the marks will be split across the assessment objectives (AO’s), for example, an 8 mark question may split as follows: - 4 marks for AO1 – demonstrate knowledge - 4 marks for AO2 – apply knowledge • See pages 366–378 for examples of the types of questions that can be asked in Sections A and B.
