OCR GCSE Drama
23 A With a partner, make a list of any props mentioned in the play. B Choose one and either draw a sketch or write three sentences describing how it will look and be used in the play. Explain why it is important in the context of the drama. A Using one of the staging configurations shown on pages 8–11, draw a set design for the opening of the play you are studying. B Complete the following sentences: • The set I have designed is appropriate for this play because… • For this set design, the audience will (learn/think/wonder/feel)… Sound and lighting Both sound and lighting add immeasurably to the impact of a production. When designing for either of these, consider: • How does it contribute to the period or setting of the play? • How does it help to establish the mood or atmosphere of the play? • Will it help with transitions, perhaps showing passages of time or changes in location or mental states? • What equipment will be needed to produce the design? • How will it help to tell the story of the play? • What effect will it have on the audience? TASK 2.7 TASK 2.8 Remember to consider the impact that your design choices will have on the audience and how your designs will help to tell the story of the play. TIP: For more information about how lighting and sound effects can be created, see pages 224–229. LOOK HERE A Below is a short excerpt from a candidate’s writing about sound and lighting. List all the technical terminology used. In the beginning of the play, there will be a blackout [1] and the audience will hear a recording of the beeping sound of a hospital monitor. [2] The lights will fade up [3] to reveal a hospital room with a group of people gathered around a bed. The lights will have a green filter, [4] which will emphasise the green hospital gowns the doctors are wearing and also make the actors’ complexions look green and eerie. [5] Off stage, an actor using a microphone [6] will say the first line. B Choose a section from the play you are studying (between one or two pages) and note opportunities for sound or lighting design. Aim to include technical vocabulary, as in the example above. TASK 2.9 [1] Identifies the opening lighting state. [2] Suggests a recorded sound effect. [3] Identifies how a lighting transition will occur. [4] States a choice of colour filter. [5] Justifies choice and explains effect. [6] Suggests a form of amplification. Remember to use correct theatrical terminology when writing about your performance and production ideas. Revise the key terms defined in this chapter so that you can use them with confidence. TIP: PERFORmING A TEXT
