Brief descriptions of the main figures in Blood Brothers are given on the following page. A At the opening of some productions of Blood Brothers , the exteriors of the Lyons and Johnstone homes are shown, highlighting their differences. Draw a sketch to show how you would depict the two homes. Consider: • The materials from which the homes would be made (brick, wood, concrete and so on) • The style and colours of the homes (Victorian, 20th century; large, small; types of windows and doors) • What is outside the home (garden, street-lamp, bin, toys, pathway…). B Write two paragraphs in response to the following question: ‘Describe how you could show the social or historical context of the play by your design choices for the costumes and sets for Mrs Lyons and Mrs Johnstone.’ TASK 3.6 Learners must know and understand: • How meaning is communicated through: • An actor’s vocal and physical interpretation of character. WHAT THE SPECIFICATION SAYS… A Liverpool housewife cleaning her front door, 1964. A backstreet in a working-class neighbourhood. EXTENSION Research Liverpool from the 1960s to 1980s to gain a better understanding of the context. Some possible topics include: • Social context: families, schools, housing, roles of women, unemployment • Cultural context: fashion, music, architecture • Historical context: economics, news and political events. Make a note of anything that helps your understanding of the play and how it could be staged or designed. 3 THE SET TEXTS
