OCR AS exam/Year 1 course Component 01 Research methods 75 marks Written paper 1½ hours 50% of total AS level Section A Multiple choice questions 15 marks Fifteen questions from across the component content. Questions could also relate to the research methods used in the core studies. This content is covered in Chapter 1 of Book 1. Practice questions and guidance for sections A, B and C can be found on pages 52–57 of Book 1. Section B Research design and response 35 marks Assessment will focus on a novel source. The themes for questions will be: • The planning and design of research. • The evaluation of research. • Improvements to research. Section C Data analysis and interpretation 25 marks This section will require learners to analyse and interpret novel data or a piece of hypothetical research using descriptive and/or inferential statistics. Component 02 Psychological themes through core studies 75 marks Written paper 1½ hours 50% of total AS level Section A Core studies 25 marks Questions based on the core studies—there are two core studies for each of the five areas of psychology. One is a classic study and the other a contemporary one. The core studies are described ‘in a nutshell’ and in detail in each Chapter 2–6 of Book 1. Practice questions and guidance for Section A is provided at the end of each Chapter 2–6 of Book 1: questions on core studies singly and in pairs. Individually In terms of methodological issues Evaluation of each study in terms of methodological issues is covered on one spread after each core study. In their pairs The core studies are compared in the review section of each chapter of Book 1. In terms of the key theme and area The area and key theme are discussed on separate spreads in each chapter of Book 1. Section B Areas, perspectives and debates 25 marks Questions will focus on areas, perspectives and debates. The areas, perspectives and debates are covered in Chapter 7 of Book 1. Links between the core studies and Chapter 7 are on the ‘Review of core studies’ spread in Chapters 2–6 of Book 1. Practice questions and guidance for Section B is provided at the end of Chapter 7, pages 370–372, of Book 1. Section C Practical applications 25 marks Questions will require learners to apply their knowledge and understanding of psychology to a novel source. Two examples are given in each chapter of Book 1 so you can practise answering this kind of question. The secret to doing well is being prepared to think on your feet – apply your knowledge. Don’t just memorise answers but be ready to consider the exam question and use it as an opportunity to display your understanding of psychology. This book provides a lot of ‘background information’ to help you develop your understanding. But you do also need to know the specific details – researchers’ names, sample sizes, mean scores, questions asked and so on. 4 Introduction
