WJEC/Eduqas GCSE Drama: Revision Guide

DEVISING CHAPTER 1 AO 2 AO 4 AO 1 What is devising? Devising simply means creating (or ‘making up’) your own piece of theatre. Theatre companies work together to devise new theatre from their choice of stimulus, just as you will do. Stimulus for ideas can be any source of inspiration, from political situations and world events to a song, story or painting you love, or a line of dialogue you overhear in the street. What do I need to do for my assessment? Your group will create, develop and perform a piece of devised theatre. The performance will be recorded audio-visually from the audience’s point of view. Your group can have: • two to five performers • up to four designers. Each designer will be responsible for a different design element: lighting , sound , set (including props) or wardrobe (including make-up) . You will be given a selection of stimulus material to help you think of ideas. Your group’s devised piece will be based on the work of a theatre practitioner or genre, whose techniques will help you communicate your ideas to your audience in a final performance. You will each produce a portfolio of evidence showing your devised scene’s development. After your performance, you will each write an evaluation of your contribution to the devised performance, reporting back on the process and results of bringing your devised piece to the stage, including: • What went well and why? • What did you learn along the way? • What would you do differently next time? This chapter will help you to produce: • a performance or design for your devised scene • a portfolio of supporting evidence • a written evaluation. For more information on design elements, see pages 23–40. LINK Genres on pages 83–105. Portfolio of evidence on pages 112–116. Written evaluation on pages 117–126. FIND HELP FOR … Brief Encounter , devised and performed by Kneehigh Theatre (see Emma Rice, page 66). Include your answers to these questions in your portfolio, with visual evidence (diagrams, photographs, discussion notes) of what you tried and why. FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO 11 DEVISING THEATRE part 1
