WJEC/Eduqas GCSE Drama: Revision Guide
1 In pairs, improvise a scene where two characters have not seen each other for a long time. How might their private thoughts in your direct address to the audience contrast with what they say to each other? For example: ACTOR 1: ( To audience ) He was so much older and badly dressed she barely recognised him. ( Turning to other character ) You look great! I’d know you anywhere! ACTOR 2: ( To character ) Likewise! I’d know you anywhere! ( To audience ) He desperately tried to remember her name. 2 Below is a picture with several characters, suggesting different viewpoints on the same event. In a group, write a monologue from the point of view of one character in the picture. Or, write more than one monologue and explore how the perspectives of the different characters vary. ACTIVITY 3.4 Using stimulus materials with Brechtian techniques Choose one of the following quotes and discuss, in your group, what scenario you could perform using the quote as stimulus: I want to break free. Please believe me. You’ve got to go there to come back. Cast someone as the narrator, and use a mixture of dialogue, reported speech, gestures and key items of costume to represent characters. Try to perform the whole of your scenario – everything from warm-up to scene changes – in front of an audience, as a Brechtian production would. In your group, discuss what is going on in the picture on the right. What do you think the sculptor might mean by it – what issue might it symbolise? ACTIVITY 3.5 I’m not the same person I was then. 57 CHAPTER 3 chapter 3 THEATRE PRA TITIONERS
