WJEC/Eduqas GCSE PE Personal Fitness Programme: Student Companion

Self-analysis Before you design your PFP you will need an understanding of your personal strengths and weaknesses. You will need an understanding of these to identify targets that you can work on to bring about improvements in your performance. By the end of this chapter: • you will know your strengths and weaknesses in your chosen sport • you will begin to think about targets for improvement. What to do and why You will need to think carefully about your chosen sport or activity and identify the components of fitness required to perform effectively and ef ciently. For example, a centre in netball may require cardiovascular endurance , agility and speed to perform effectively in a game of netball. To nd out your strengths and weaknesses, you will need to complete a range of tness tests for the components of tness speci c to your sport or activity. Once you have collected the data complete a self-analysis by comparing your tness against national norms . How to do it There are 11 components of tness that are present in your everyday life (see Table 3.1). These are elements of exercise and tness speci c to your needs and the demands of your chosen sport or activity. Before you can complete your self- analysis you will need an understanding of: • components of tness and their de nitions • how each component is used within sports and activities • test protocols for each component of tness. Application of components of fitness You need a good knowledge and understanding of components of tness as well as their de nitions. Once you have this understanding you should then be able to apply speci c examples to your chosen activity. Cyclists need good muscle endurance as they use their muscles continuously throughout a race 3 Test protocols explain how the test is carried out. Tests should be carried out correctly to increase validity and reliability. National norms are standardised tests designed to compare and rank order test takers. When using national norms tables it is important that you compare your results against tables of the same age range and gender. 22
