Exam practice and techniques 120 Preparing for the exam WJEC Eduqas GCSE Sociology includes two papers. Both papers last for 1 hour 45 minutes, which adds up to 105 minutes each. Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the total mark. Paper 1 Understanding Social Processes Six questions • Question 1: Mix and match from across the paper (4 marks) • Questions 2 and 3: Key concepts and processes of cultural transmission • Question 4: Family • Question 5: Education • Question 6: Sociological research methods Paper 2 Understanding Social Structures Seven questions • Question 1: Mix and match from across the paper (4 marks) • Questions 2, 3, 4 and 5: Social differentiation and stratification • Question 6: Crime and deviance • Question 7: Applied methods of sociological enquiry The main topic areas (Family, Education and Crime) are worth 29–30 marks each on the Sample Assessment Materials. On Paper 1 Key concepts and processes of cultural transmission is worth 19 marks. On Paper 2 Social differentiation and differentiation is worth 55 marks on the SAMs. Questions on research methods form 18 marks on Paper 1 and 11 marks on Paper 2. AO stands for Assessment Objective. Over the whole exam: • 40% of the marks are for AO1 – Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, evidence and methods. • 40% of the marks are for AO2 – Apply knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, evidence and methods. • 20% of the marks are for AO3 – Analyse and evaluate sociological theories, concepts, evidence and methods in order to construct arguments, make judgements and draw conclusions. Type of exam questions The type of exam questions and amount of marks awarded relate closely to the skills required in the answers. There may be some variation in the format of the papers, but both papers will assess the three skills AO1, AO2 and AO3. Questions may assess one of these skills or a combination of them. The mark schemes make this clear.
