[10] WJEC / [6] Eduqas The Law Commission was set up in 1965 under the Law Commission Act 1965. The Law Commission is the only full-time, law-reforming body in the UK. The Law Commission is made up of ve members – ex-judges, law students etc., who are put in that role every ve years. The Law Commission cannot change the law, but can in uence and advise Parliament on what to do. The Law Commission was set up and included main roles which are: repeal, create, codi cation and consolidation. Its main job is to keep the law under review. Parliament can ignore the recommendations and they are not often successful. An example of the Law Commission' s success is the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977. One of the main aims of the Law Commission is to repeal. This means that any unnecessary law will be abolished. Another role is to create. This is when a new law is created as a result of an event or because society needs it – for example same-sex marriages. Finally, the main role of the Law Commission is codi cation. This is where numerous statutes and common law are brought together in one statute – for example The Care Act 2014. Overall, the Law Commission is a law-reform body that, after being given the task by Parliament, will review the law and give advice to Parliament on whether to repeal, create, consolidate or codify the law.
