Activity 1.12 Apply the law This topic could also feature as an ‘apply the law to a scenario’-style question where you may have to advise a claimant as to how they could go about changing the law. Consider the following scenario. Edna, who is 80 years old, has always been an active campaigner for issues concerning the environment. She recently watched the TV documentary Blue Planet II and was angered by the damage that plastic straws and cotton buds are causing to the environment and wildlife in the ocean. Edna is so worried about the lasting impact on future generations that she wishes to campaign to reform the law and ban single-use plastic straws and cotton buds. Advise Edna about how she could try to promote reform of the law on the use of single-use plastic in England and Wales. Use the following structure to help you answer the question. Introduction • State what is meant by law reform and why it is needed. • Set out who you have been asked to advise. • State that Edna will have a variety of options as an individual seeking to change the law, but that there are also other law-reform bodies that individuals cannot access but may be more successful in reforming the law.
