WJEC GCSE Food and Nutrition: Revision Guide
25 DIET AND GOOD HEALTH Sample exam questions and answers with commentaries Q1 How could a school canteen encourage the pupils to eat more fruit and vegetables? Model answer The canteen could reduce the price of pieces of fruit to encourage more students to buy and eat fruit rather than expensive chocolate and cakes. They could provide raw vegetable sticks served with hummus or dips. The canteen could work with Student Voice to add vegetable-rich dishes to the menu – dishes that students would actually buy. They could have tasting sessions to encourage students to try fruit and vegetables they may never have tasted before. Students could have reward cards that are stamped every time they buy a fruit or vegetable dish which, after 20 dishes, would earn them a reward. The canteen could put colourful flyers/posters around the school. Commentary This is a good answer showing clearly that the student has considered a range of ways in which the canteen could promote the uptake of fruit and vegetables. Q2 Describe the factors that influence a person’s energy requirement. Model answer Age, gender, occupation, state of health and exercise all influence how much energy is required. Different ages of life have different energy requirements – babies and toddlers need less than active teenagers. Men generally require more energy than females simply because they have larger bodies and more muscle mass. A person’s job will influence energy intake. A sedentary office worker will need less energy intake than a builder or athlete. People who are ill need more energy to help repair their body and fight infections. However, if the person is immobile then they may need less energy intake. Commentary Highest band marks would be awarded for this answer because it gives a wide range of factors influencing energy requirements. The points made have been justified, showing both knowledge and understanding of the subject. Weak answer Make the fruit cheaper so pupils can afford to buy it. Have a competition to see who can eat the most fruit each week. Put up adverts round the school to get pupils to buy fruit and vegetables. Commentary This would receive medium band marks. The student has given three ways of promoting fruit and vegetables, however the answer lacks the detail of the model answer. Weak answer People need different amounts of energy depending on their job. Men need more energy than women. If you have too much energy you will get fat. Commentary Three good points made but each point needs justifying by posing the question ‘why?’, such as: Why does a person’s job influence their energy requirement? If each point had been explained higher marks would be awarded. SECTION 1
