13 CYMORTH ADOLYGU / REVISION AID SKIMMING and SCANNING to help with READING Skimming What are the requirements? • Read the title, headings and sub-headings • Look at the pictures, title, sub-titles, paragraphs • Read the first and last lines in a paragraph • Think about the general meaning of the passage • Don’t read every word and every sentence Scanning What needs to be done? • Knowing which questions that need answering. That is, what are you looking for? • Don’t read every word • Read vertically rather than horizontally • Look for clues, e.g. capital letters, numbers, shape of word • Use signs, e.g. headings, sub-headings Questions that need to be answered. Pwy ...? Look for: capital letters names of people talking about people, e.g. the man next door, publican Mr./Mrs. People’s work, e.g. headteacher/doctor Pwy ddywedodd ...? Inverted commas (when somebody is/ has said something, e.g. “ Es i allan i’r ...” meddai Siôn) Pam ...? Look for: achos ...
