5 RHAGAIR / PREFACE Preface The purpose of this book is to help you revise effectively for the GCSE Welsh second language assessment. This book provides a wide range of exercises to help you practise the language skills needed to reach your potential. These exercises are aligned to the four main units of the specification (the document that outlines the requirements of the course). You will notice that the book is presented in a bilingual format so as to ensure that you are able to understand every word. You are encouraged, however, to use the Welsh language sections; this will raise the standard of your understanding of the language. The book includes useful tips to advise you on how to revise. Language comprehension techniques and the highly important reading skills of skimming and scanning are emphasised. You are encouraged throughout to make use of these skills when completing the exercises. They will prove invaluable when you are actually sitting the exams. Do make use of the various links in the book to the WJEC and Illuminate Publishing websites where there are further exercises, essential vocabulary and language patterns, scripts and associated film clips. Finally, use every possible opportunity in class and beyond the school boundaries to practise using and listening to Welsh.
