Section 7: Assessment 324 How to prepare for the examination It is important that you are familiar with the command words and their meanings. A command word is an instruction to follow. It also provides an indication as to the depth of response you are required to give. Command word Meaning Analyse Examine carefully and in detail so as to identify causes, key factors, possible results, etc. Assess Estimate or judge the value or importance of something. Give careful consideration to all the factors that apply and identify which are the most important or relevant. Make a judgement on the importance of something and come to a conclusion where needed. Give positive and negative viewpoints or advantages and disadvantages. Comment on and present an informed opinion. Define Specify meaning – give a clear and correct meaning of a word, term or statement. Describe Identify main features and give descriptive, factual detail. Discuss Explore the subject by looking at its advantages and disadvantages and arrive at a conclusion. Evaluate Make a reasoned judgement (including an appropriate conclusion) whilst having critically considered a variety of arguments /ideas. Explain A comprehensive account of a topic, exploring underlying reasons, focusing upon the aspect highlighted. Identify Give List State Name Produce an answer from recall. Select examples from given text /data. Concise answer without further explanation or evidence needed. Justify Support a case with evidence – give a satisfactory reason for something. Outline Write a concise account carefully selecting relevant information and demonstrating the main features or general principles of the topic. The examination structure and styles of questions Ensure that you are familiar with the different styles of question that could be used in the written examination. The format of the examination paper will always be the same. All questions are compulsory and there are three sections: ⦁ Section A: Structured /short answer response questions (including graduated lead in questions ), the focus of which will be recall of knowledge (LO1/LO2/LO3). Suggested time allocation: 10 minutes. ⦁ Section B: Questions requiring extended answers , including graduated lead in questions /free response questions , the focus of which will be application of knowledge (LO1/LO2/LO3/LO4). Suggested time allocation: 40 minutes. ⦁ Section C: Questions in this section will relate to a Case Study , the focus of which will be application of knowledge to a specific dietary need / life stage (LO2/LO3/LO4).
