WJEC Physics for AS: Student Bk

5 About this book Self-test Questions to enable you to check your understanding of the subject at that point in the text. They are often short calculations (though some are longer), which require you to apply equations developed in the main text. The answers to these Self-test questions are given at the end of the book. Stretch & challenge Material developed in these is designed to make you think more deeply about the subject. They usually include questions for you to answer and will be useful for students who will progress to the full A level and to those intending to progress to higher study in physics or engineering. Unlike the self-test marginalia, the answers to these questions are not provided. Maths check / Practical tip These refer to particular techniques and often direct you to Chapters 3 and 4 for a fuller treatment. Exam tip These are to help you avoid common unnecessary mistakes in answering examination questions. For example: Section 1.6 Using radiation to investigate stars on pages 70–79 deals with Unit 1 Topic 6 of the WJEC specification, with the same name. However, some areas of physics are related closely to material in more than one unit. The behaviour of objects falling under gravity, for example, relates to material covered in Section 1.2 Kinematics, Section 1.3 Dynamics and Section 1.4 Energy concepts. To facilitate the use of this book, a grid is provided on page 215 to match specification areas to book sections. An extract is shown on the right. The grid shows that specification Unit 1, Topic 3(e) is covered in Sections 1.3.1 and 1.3.3. It also shows that Unit 1 Topic 2(e) is covered in Sections 1.2.3, 1.2.4 and 1.3.8.
