WJEC Vocational Award Constructing the Built Environment Level 1/2
Safety officer responsibilities KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING • Observe and report to senior management and directors of the organisation all aspects and details of their site audits to enable the organisation, management and workforce to: • Help them identify workplace risks and effectively know how to deal with them. • Ensure that the health and safety controls measures are in place and appropriate to the task or situation being undertaken. • Work closely with everyone to show the level of commitment of the organisation and workforce to deliver a safe and compliant project environment. Tradesperson responsibilities KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING • Comply with the directions and instructions given to them by the main contractor or the employer. These directions are often the same across many different sites and similar between other main contractors. • Coordinate with other contractors or tradespeople by planning and managing their work to optimise health, safety, quality production and programme aspects of the works. It is often the transition between phases of work or different trades where issues arise, such as sharing areas of the works at the same time or potentially working over each other. • Remain interested and helpful when consulted about matters that affect their health, safety and welfare by taking care of their own health and safety and others who may be affected by their actions or work. This includes reporting anything they see which is likely to be dangerous to their own or others’ health and safety. Tradespeople should always remain cooperative with their employer, fellow workers, contractors and other dutyholders; for example, where different trades are sharing a canteen or office, they should remain respectful of each other and not antagonise co-workers, as this is detrimental to morale and could cause issues in the future. • Strive to achieve the highest standards of quality that are relative to their craft, skill or trade. Once again, KPIs are an effective way to recognise exemplary quality together with trade awards and recognition. 132 Unit 3 Planning Construction Projects
