WJEC Vocational Award Engineering Level 1/2 Once the list has been compiled, you can then look at prioritising it, so the most important task/areas to look at can be dealt with first. This also helps to identify what resources might be needed and when to obtain those resources. Prioritised bullet-point brief list Order of importance: 1 = most important 8 = least important 1. Cycle for shoppers 2. Low cost 3. Storage 4. Adjustable 5. Existing materials (manufacturer) 6. Easy to make (manufacturer) 7. Two, three or four wheels 8. Possibly lockable. As you can see, having the knowledge and skill to extract the key features of a design brief can benefit an Engineer when trying to identify exactly what is needed in an engineered solution. Read the following brief. Using your new knowledge of how to analyse design briefs, pick-out the key features of the brief and then, in your notebook, write a shorter, more concise version. Once you have completed that exercise, write a prioritised list of the key points with the ‘most important’ first and the ‘least important’ last. Once complete, compare the prioritised list to the original brief. Which would be easier to work with and why? Design brief A large car manufacturer is looking to develop a new ‘universal’ steering wheel system for its new range of cars. The new ‘customisable’ car industry has proven to be a success and the manufacturer wants to be part of the growing trend. It is exploring the possibility of each customer having their own bespoke, individually designed steering wheel that they can quickly un-clip and re-use in their other car models if needed. The new steering wheels must be fully customisable, with the option to swap-out designs, styles and accessories, with a view towards developing more ‘options’ in the future. The new steering wheels must have a universal tting system that can be used on all other car models from the same manufacturer. The new wheels must be easy to put on and take o the steering column with no more than one button or lever to perform this function. You must also look at how much it would cost as well as the potential for improved security. Task 5.1 Having an easily identifiable list of key features can save time and reduce confusion. It also allows the Engineer to prioritise tasks and resources. Top tip 72
