Chapter 5 Analysing and Designing Products Against a Brief Creating solutions from a design brief Once you have developed the ability to identify and extract the key features of a brief, you can now use them to start creating solutions that go towards satisfying it. This task consists of two di erent design briefs. • Identify the key features of each brief. • Draw a solution using a recognised drawing technique. • Annotate and describe the key features (including material choice and why). Design brief 1 A large furniture manufacturer has asked you to design a seating solution for pupils in schools. The solution should t all pupils in a secondary school. It must be comfortable to sit on and be extremely durable. The school’s contract for this new seating solution does not come with a great deal of money, so your nances are limited. The seating solution will be placed in all new schools. All new schools have to conform to a green/environmental policy. Design brief 2 Manchester United has asked you to come up with a solution to their coach seating problem for its training grounds. It wants somewhere for the coaches to sit when watching the team train. The solution will need to be movable. United wants the coaches to stay dry and be able to have an unrestricted view of the players. The solution will be placed on the training grounds and money is no object. Task 5.2 When creating designs, use your drawing skills and stick to drawing in standardised formats, isometric, for example.
